Introduction

• The Jammu and Kashmir Film Policy 2021 was unveiled in August 2021 and is a comprehensive policy to address several objectives to make Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) the most sought-after filmmaking destination in India. With the implementation of this Policy, J&K is now experiencing a surge in big-budget movies with veteran actors, directors, and stalwarts in the movie production and music industry as front-runners.

Nonpareil Offerings under the Policy

• The policy requires an investment of 100 crores of rupees every financial year for five years, till 2026.
• The Policy provides the finest financial and other incentives, as well as support for constructing and upgrading world-class infrastructure, such as developing Film Towns, Studios, multiplexes, etc., as well as physical and intangible benefits for filming.
• A special Jammu and Kashmir Film Development Council must be established at the highest level of the J&K government in order to carry out the policy's mission-mode objectives.
• In accordance with the Policy, a specialised Single Window Cell was also established in a flash to assist interested film aficionados in filming in the UT.

Way Forward

• A Film City in the Works: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is working to facilitate the establishment of an all-encompassing Film City with amenities including music studios, skill-building institutions, etc.
• Film Policy hopes to make the J&K Film Festival an annual event that takes place on the calendar.
• J&K Film Awards: The J&K government plans to implement a system of honouring movies and filmmakers.
• Restoration and preservation work on J&K films is already in progress at the Directorate of Information and Public Affairs, which will house the Jammu and Kashmir Film Archives.
• FAM Trips: In order to promote and reward investments in this industry, the government is organising familiarisation trips for prospective investors, producers, decision-makers, and other important players.
