Start up’s making millets popular | Yojana Jan 2023

Chapter 8: Start up’s making millets popular

Introduction

  • In India, there are more than a thousand startups focusing on coarse grains, according to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

  • The Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), located in Hyderabad, intends to help small business owners succeed by exposing their products to the market.

  • With assistance from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), IIMR established the technology incubator NutriHub to promote millets.

  • Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, an initiative of the government, offers grants to startups of up to Rs 25 lakh (RKVYRAFTAAR)

  • The Millet Startup Innovation Challenge was created by the central government. This programme encourages young people to come up with practical and commercial responses to the issues currently affecting the millet environment.

  • In order to promote the export of value-added goods such noodles, pasta, breakfast cereal mix, biscuits, cookies, snacks, and sweets under the Ready to Eat (RTE) and Ready to Serve (RTS) categories, the government is also providing startup funding. The Ministry of Trade has adjusted its policies accordingly.

  • The "Millet Challenge" for entrepreneurs was launched by the Union government in 2022. Three winners would receive seed grants of Rs 1 crore each to design and build cutting-edge solutions for and across the millet value chain.

The Millet MSP

  • The government sets the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for different types of cereal throughout the nation.

  • Also, the government purchases food items on MSP. Farmers are encouraged to raise that crop since it sells for a respectable price.

  • Nowadays, MSP is set for 22 different types of grains, pulses, and oilseeds, with Jowar, Bajra, and Ragi being the three most important coarse grains.

  • The Central Government announced setting MSP for other cereals and coarse cereals with a minimum profit of 50% in the Budget for 2018–19.

Significance of Startup’s to promote Millets:

  • The majority of startups buy coarse grains straight from farmers. They then process them, prepare items, and market them both physically and online.

  • The production of coarse grains has increased as a result.

  • Additionally, this will improve Atmanirbhar Bharat, women's engagement, value addition potential, employment creation, the startup environment, and climate resilience.
