Chapter: 7 - Millet for pregnant and lactating women

Introduction

  • Due to changes in weight, plasma, and blood volume during pregnancy, there is an increased need for nutrients to support the growth and development of the foetus.

  • Due to inadequate intake of iron-rich foods, anaemia brought on by iron deficiency is one of the major health issues that pregnant women face.

  • Similar to how pregnant women do, nursing mothers also get iron deficiency anaemia as a result of postnatal blood loss.

  • According to a study, including millet-based items in the diet during the prenatal and postnatal periods can significantly improve the nutritional status of expectant mothers and nursing mothers.

Significance

  • For expectant moms and nursing mothers, the millet-based supplemental food products are particularly nutrient-dense. The flour of several millets, jaggery, and milk powder are used to make millet milk malt. A high source of protein, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and dietary fibre, ragi (finger millets) flour is used to make ragi cutlets.

  • Pearl millets, also known as bajra, are one of the numerous nutrient-rich cereals for expectant mothers. It is a great source of iron, which helps nursing and pregnant women maintain healthy levels of haemoglobin. Also, it contains a lot of dietary fibre, antioxidants, zinc, magnesium, copper, and vitamins.

  • According to studies, millet-based diets help breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women have healthier BMIs.

  • Ragi consumption is also suggested for lactating women to boost milk supply.

  • Kodo millets are incredibly nourishing, They are free of gluten, simple to digest, full of phytochemicals, antioxidants, and dietary fibre.
