Millets are regarded as miraculous foods. They can aid in the prevention and treatment of numerous modern, lifestyle-related ailments due to their high quantities of fibre, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants.
They can also be helpful in treating several lifestyle disorders like heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer due to their low carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio.
Dietary fibre helps Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes (NIDDM) patients by lowering blood glucose absorption and maintaining blood glucose levels .
Moreover, fibre binds cholesterol, preventing heart disease. Colon cancer can be prevented in part by millet fibre.
India's eating habits have been significantly impacted by modernization, which has resulted in a drop in the consumption of some cereals like millets and an increase in the consumption of items originating from animals, such as alcohol, refined sugar, fat, and oils.
Non-communicable diseases currently account for over 71% of all mortality globally, a burden that has increased as a result of this consumption pattern.
The phenolic components included in millet grains, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, make them anti-nutrients that reduce the incidence of colon and breast cancer in animals.
According to an in-vivo study, foxtail millet consumption encourages gut receptor activation, which helps treat colon cancer associated with colitis. A millet-based diet helped to decrease the STAT-3 signalling pathway, it was found as a consequence of the study.
Many studies have demonstrated that consuming too much fat in the diet can increase the chance of developing heart disease, but more recent epidemiological research has also demonstrated that consuming a diet high in fat and calories increases the risk of developing dementia.
