Chapter: 6 - Health benefit for lifestyle disease

Introduction

  • Millets are regarded as miraculous foods. They can aid in the prevention and treatment of numerous modern, lifestyle-related ailments due to their high quantities of fibre, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants.

  • They can also be helpful in treating several lifestyle disorders like heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer due to their low carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio.

  • Dietary fibre helps Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes (NIDDM) patients by lowering blood glucose absorption and maintaining blood glucose levels .

  • Moreover, fibre binds cholesterol, preventing heart disease. Colon cancer can be prevented in part by millet fibre.

  • India's eating habits have been significantly impacted by modernization, which has resulted in a drop in the consumption of some cereals like millets and an increase in the consumption of items originating from animals, such as alcohol, refined sugar, fat, and oils.

  • Non-communicable diseases currently account for over 71% of all mortality globally, a burden that has increased as a result of this consumption pattern.

How millets affect cancer:

  • The phenolic components included in millet grains, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, make them anti-nutrients that reduce the incidence of colon and breast cancer in animals.

  • According to an in-vivo study, foxtail millet consumption encourages gut receptor activation, which helps treat colon cancer associated with colitis. A millet-based diet helped to decrease the STAT-3 signalling pathway, it was found as a consequence of the study.

Millets' Effect on Neurological Disorders

  • Many studies have demonstrated that consuming too much fat in the diet can increase the chance of developing heart disease, but more recent epidemiological research has also demonstrated that consuming a diet high in fat and calories increases the risk of developing dementia.
