How To Prepare State PSC

Odisha Public Service Commission

The Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) is the state agency authorized to conduct the Civil Services Examination for entry-level appointments to the various civil services of Odisha.

The recommendations of the Royal Commission on superior services in India, 1949 are referred to in short as the Lee Commission. They were added to the Constitution of India as Articles 315 to 323. OPSC was constituted on April 1, 1949 after its bifurcation from the former Bihar and Odisha Joint Public Service Commission. At the time of creation, the Odisha Public Service Commission had three members, including a chairman. Currently there are six members.

As per the OPSC Exam Pattern, it has three stages:

  • OPSC Prelims Exam
  • OPSC Main Exam
  • Interview

OPSC Exam Pattern: Preliminary Examination

The preliminary exam consists of two papers. The exam is objective type (multiple choice question) and each exam shall be of 2 hours duration.

Paper I: The paper I consist of General studies questions. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and the total marks are 200. The merit list for the mains exam will be based on the marks obtained in the Paper I.

Paper II: The Paper II consists of aptitude questions. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and the total marks will be 200. The paper II is qualifying in nature and the candidates have to score 33% in the Paper II otherwise there Paper I will not be evaluated.

OPSC Exam Pattern: Preliminary Examination

OPSC Prelims Paper I

  • Current event of National and International importance
  • Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiative, etc.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • General Issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change that do not require subject specialization, and
  • General Science.

OPSC Prelims Paper II

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal Skills including communication skills
  • Decision Making and Problem Solving
  • Logical Reasoning and Analytic ability
  • General Mental Ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude) (Class-X level). Data interpretation (Charts, Graphs, Tables, Data Sufficiency etc. Class-X level); and
  • English Language Comprehension Skills (Class-X level).

OPSC Exam Pattern: Mains Examination

The Mains exam consists of five compulsory paper and four optional paper for which candidates have to select two optional subjects.

General Studies I

  • History of Modern India and Indian Culture
  • Geography of India
  • Indian Polity
  • Current National issues and topics of social relevance
  • Legal and environmental issues

General Studies II

  • India and the World
  • Indian Economy
  • International Affairs & Institutions
  • Developments in the field of science & technology, communications and space
  • Statistical Analysis, Graphs & Diagrams

Personality Test

The candidates for the personality test will be selected on the basis of the merit list prepared based on the marks obtained in the mains exam. The personality test will be of 250 marks. The final list of recommended candidates will be based on the cumulative marks obtained in Mains exam and the personality test.
