Flood is a situation referred to when water is accumulated over the land surface beyond an average level. It can be both natural as well as man made. Natural floods are those caused due to a)excess of rainfall due to monsoonal disturbances, b) changes in the river course eg kosi in bihar; while man made floods are a result of human activities ranging from - a) deforestation, as tress hold the water percolating down b) unplanned urban settlements c) poor drainage system d) broken dams etc. Most recently, it has been noticed that climate change is resulting into floods. 1) Climate change causes increase in the average temperature of earth resulting into more precipitation and hence more rainfall. 2) climate change causes the melting of the ice caps and hence, rivers are overflodded with water. 3) due to unequal heating of the surface of earth with one area receiving excess of heat , creating major pressure differences leading to severe hurricanes in ocean water bodies damaging the coastal areas. Hence it's time that steps be taken to prevent such occasions of flooding by reducing the adverse effects of climate change 1) demotivating deforestation and promoting afforestation. 2) using hybrid and e vehicles instead of petrol and diesel. 3) strict compliance with the global carbon emitting standards. 4) conserving the carbon sink of forests. Further mitigation at local levels is equally important to safeguard against the effects of flooding - 1) well planned urban settlements and rennovation of the drainage system of the country through better mapping facilities like Google 2) rain water harvesting at household level. 3) logical planning and sustainable implementation through GIS based tools. Moreover first hand information should be given to people through forecast and faster evacuation and resettlement to people living near the riverbank and coastal areas helps in reducing the fatalities caused due to flooding.
