CABINET APPROVES MEGA 5G AUCTION

The central government has approved the auction of airwave capable of offering 5G telecom services, including ultra-high-speed internet.

It also gave permission for the setting up of captive 5G networks by big tech.

ABOUT 5G

• 5G is the 5th generation mobile network which is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
• 5G enables a new kind of network which is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, various objects, and devices.
• 5G wireless technology is meant to deliver higher multi-Gbps peak data speeds, ultra-low latency, massive network capacity, increased availability, and a more uniform user experience to more users.

IMPACT OF 5G

• 5G technology will have an impact on both established and new emerging technology like the internet of things, artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud computing, data analytics and virtual and augmented reality.

• It will enhance the levels of connectivity by upgrading 4G networks with five key functional drivers: superfast broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communication, massive machine-type communications, high reliability/availability and efficient energy usage.
• In transportation and mobility, the massive machine-type communication feature of 5G can prove to be a game-changer. A network of EVs and charging stations can be created, optimizing the availability of the charging infrastructure. This will upgrade the cost-effectiveness of EVs’ ecosystem. Integrating the initiative to transport systems like Fastag for toll and entry tax will not only improve the efficiency of the transport system but also help in decreasing the carbon footprint.

HURDLES FOR ROLLING OUT 5G

• Critical infrastructures: 5G will not only require a fundamental change to the core architecture of the communication system but also requires augmentation to the existing infrastructure.
• Financial liability: For the transition from 4G to 5G technology, one has to upgrade to the latest cellular technology, and that will create a financial liability for consumers.
• Capital inadequacy: Lack of adequate capital with the telecom companies, is delaying the 5G spectrum allocation.
• Late adoption: countries like India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia are late in adopting 5G technology, hence, may get decreased revenue from the service.

OACHIRA KALI RITUAL

• Oachira kali is a festival celebrated in the month of June in Kerala. It is to commemorate the Battle of Kayamkulam, fought between the Maharaja of Travancore Marthanda Varma and the Raja of Kayamkulam on the plains of Oachira Temple.

• The battlefield was a paddy field adjacent to the famous Oachira Parabrahma temple and the festivities are part of a ritual associated with the shrine.
• The festival also includes local men mocking the battle fought between Kayamkulam and Ambalapuzha kingdoms in the medieval period.
